Short answer first. RAW support is a minority feature. Of the 206 editing tools in our database, 50 list RAW format support in their specifications, about one in four. They are not all photo editors, and they are not all expensive: half have a free tier, the median paid price is $11.99 a month, and 31 of the 50 now pair the RAW pipeline with AI features such as denoise and subject masking.

The category split holds a surprise. Professional photo editors are the core, 18 of the 50, but the tail matters: 7 mobile editors handle RAW, which is the phone DNG workflow, 6 are open source, and 5 are professional video tools whose color pipelines accept camera RAW formats. A photographer who assumes RAW means a desktop subscription is working from an old map.

One honest wrinkle: RAW tools are slightly behind the AI wave, not ahead of it. Across the whole database, 72 percent of tools ship AI features; among the RAW fifty the share is 62 percent. The reason is structural. A RAW developer's core job is a conservative signal pipeline, demosaicing, highlight recovery, color science, and vendors change it slowly because photographers notice. The AI layer arrives as additions around that core, denoise first, then masking, then culling, rather than as a replacement for it.

Choosing inside the fifty is a workflow question. If AI denoise is the point, filter to the 31 with AI features and compare their RAW handling specifically, since a general editor's RAW support can be a viewer rather than a developer. If the point is ownership, the one-time and open source names in the census are the stock. Our guide to RAW file editors and what to check tests the checks themselves, demosaicing, highlight recovery and profile support, that separate a real RAW developer from a checkbox.
